The role of a county treasurer is to collect and account for county funds raised through property taxes and motor vehicles registration. The county treasurer’s office also administers and distributes vehicle registration for the county, among other responsibilities.

Renew online

To pay your property taxes online please follow this link https://www.kansas.gov/propertytax/.

Announcement: 2290 Heavy Fuel use forms are due by renewal. They can be processed online or by paper.  Contact the Treasurer’s Office to obtain paper copies. If you file online, you will be emailed a stamped copy that you can forward to the Treasurer’s Office to keep on file for your January / February renewals. If you file by mail, you’ll receive a stamped copy in the mail that also needs to be brought to the Treasurer’s Office or retained for renewals.

VIN Inspections

The Sheriff’s Office will do vehicle inspections on Tue, Wed, and Thurs. from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.  If you can not come in during these hours please call to make an appointment. 785-332-8880

Vehicle Renewal

Bring to the County Treasurer:

  1. Signed Certificate of Origin (new vehicle) or signed title (used vehicle).  A lien release request is needed when a lien is on the title.
  2. Sales Tax – Bill of sale with vehicle information from the seller of Kansas Retail Sales Tax Receipt.
  3. Millage – Odometer Reading
  4. Proof of Kansas Insurance
  5. Owner registration for the vehicle sold or trade-in
  6. If out of state, a VIN inspection from the Sheriff’s department is required.
  7. In a non-highway title, an inspection from the highway patrol is required.  Call 785-625-3518 for an appointment.

Register within 60 days of purchase to avoid penalties.

Trucks over 12,000 lbs & Trailers expire December 31st.  Enforcement date begins March 1st.  Renewal period is from January 2 – February 28.

Drivers License Office Hours:
8:00 – 4:00 Weekdays

The Treasurer’s Office is doing driver’s license, but it is by APPOINTMENT ONLY. Cheyenne County is a renewal station only. New customer’s must go to a full service station for their initial license/permit. This includes driver’s education completion students. Colby is the closest full service station. Their number is 785-462-3620.
